ABSTRACT

In order to properly evaluate the effectiveness of a behavior management plan, physical education teachers must collect data on occurrences of the target misbehaviors. This chapter teaches readers how to operationally define target behaviors, the importance of using well-written operational definitions, how to determine which type of data to collect, and methods of graphing the collected data. This chapter highlights four data types (i.e., count, rate, duration, and latency) and discusses when each is appropriate for use in physical education. Once the data are collected and graphed, these must be interpreted to determine how effective the behavior management plan was at reducing the target misbehavior. This information can be useful for feedback for the teachers, administrators, parents or guardians, and the students themselves.
