ABSTRACT

It may be too cumbersome for physical educators to continue to implement an intrusive behavior system throughout the duration of a school year; ideally, behavioral control will eventually be transferred from the teacher to the students themselves. This chapter introduces the reader to self-management and the important role in has in the physical education behavior management process. Practical examples are provided to help illustrate how physical educators can teach the students to self-manage their own behavior. Additionally, the chapter concludes with a brief discussion on ethics. More specifically, the authors highlight ethical issues related to staying within one’s scope of practice and remaining up to date on current research as it relates to behavior management in the physical education classroom.
