ABSTRACT
The documents which follow have been arranged in the categories of the types of evidence available — literary and narrative sources, charters, leases, writs, laws, custumals, surveys, artistic and archaeological — and within these categories in a roughly chronological order. An alternative arrangement by subjects would lead to far too much overlap and repetition, as well as perhaps imposing a pre-conceived pattern upon the reader to an even greater degree than a selection of documents of this type is in any case likely to do.
