ABSTRACT

The transcendent function corresponds to an important aspect of Jung’s perception of the psyche. As a movement in the psyche it is not usually observed by the ego as it takes place on an unconscious level but its effect may be felt. It occurs as a result of the meeting of the ego with unconscious contents. The opposing forces of the ego and the unconscious create a state of suspension in which a third dimension arises. Psychologically it means transcending from one psychological state to another. It is an unconscious movement occurring out of the suspension between the opposites. The transcendent function occurs naturally and belongs to every psychic process at every age and stage of development. It brings with it a sensation of well-being and release from what was previously inhibiting.
