ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces China’s literary translation activities in respect of the importation of foreign literature via translating. The narrow meaning of Chinese classical literature may refer to Chinese classical literary works. With surprising insights, the Belgian translation theorist Andre Lefevere conveyed an impression of how translated literature was created and treated in China in an article entitled Chinese and Western Thinking on Translation. Despite the thriving of the introduction of English literature into China via translation, some Chinese researchers had been worried about the quality of the Chinese translation of English literature and flagged the problem. In China, a dragon symbolizes good luck and high status and gives a generally auspicious feeling. In the English tradition and literature, however, a dragon can be the symbol of something unpleasant and evil. According to Xin Liu, the allusions in English literature came from three sources: myths and legends, religious tradition, and fables.
