ABSTRACT
This chapter establishes the book’s overall intent to demonstrate how Whitehead’s metaphysics formed the basis for Motherwell’s impressive reconsideration of the surrealist improvisatory process known as psychic automatism, which he named “plastic automatism.” In addition, it addresses the overall historical and theoretical basis for connecting Motherwell, Whitehead, automatism, and abstract expressionism.
