ABSTRACT

Whitehead, who was not an aesthetician, has been credited with approaching philosophy aesthetically and, in particular, poetically, so his ideas were couched in ways that would be meaningful for someone like Motherwell, who was himself well versed in poetry. In addition to reviewing this poetic connection, Chapter 3 considers Whitehead’s special vocabulary, its connections with poetry and quantum theory, and the ways Motherwell was able to apply it to his own artistic practice.
