ABSTRACT
There is a solid evidence base from researchers and practitioners of the key importance of spoken language and its link to learning. The link between spoken and subsequent success in written language is clear. Colourful Semantics has been developed to support children’s spoken language but is easily adapted to support development of written language skills. The session plans in this chapter have been developed to be used with children from approximately age four to eight years but can be adapted to be used with older children. The session plans focus on both spoken and written language skills and can be used with whole classes and small groups. These session plans are a guide only and can be easily adapted to different ages and abilities. They are designed for sentences up to the ‘why’ stage, but can easily be adapted and extended to include teaching of ‘how’ and ‘to who’ depending on the learners’ abilities.
