ABSTRACT

TNC industry growth in Seattle and in all major cities has been nothing short of explosive. Most of the TNC operating data in this chapter are newly available through public records requests after years of opposition to its release by Uber and Lyft. The data is current through 2018. It is not available in any other books on the TNC industry. TNC industry statistics presented include TNC revenue trips, comparison of TNC and taxicab revenue trips, TNC market share by revenue trips and rates of revenue trip growth. Trends in the data illustrate a clear braking to the TNC revenue trip growth rates and the immanent approach of zero growth in 2019 or 2020. Counts of TNC and taxicab licensed vehicles and drivers are compared. Fare revenue estimates are calculated for Uber and Lyft for both 2017 and 2018. TNC driver earnings are estimated and compared with taxicab driver earnings. It is concluded that the declines in the taxicab industry in Seattle have bottomed out and begun to recover revenue trips, revenue miles and fare revenue. TNC and taxicab driver license fees and vehicle license fees are compared. Taxicab and TNC vehicle collision statistics are compared.
