ABSTRACT

Fluency is an important feature of language learners’ speech. Off-the-cuff activities are short activities that students do without any planning. Planned activities require students to set aside time thinking together about how to approach the task. Teachers provide support and guidance to enable explicit learning of skills or to enhance performance. Fluency practice helps learners become more confident even though they may not express all their ideas precisely because of gaps in their language. Teachers often encourage learners to just say what they want to say with whatever linguistic resources they have and not to worry too much about accuracy. Students bring along a picture of their favourite character or prepare a digital copy. Students could choose something of interest from many sources and share it in small groups of two or three minutes.
