ABSTRACT
The chapter lays the foundation for the topic. This chapter provides basic information on Yunnan Province and the challenges faced by people living with HIV/AIDs (PLWHA) due to porous borders, multiple minority groups and languages. It also introduces the reader to the three main cohorts being considered. It includes a section on methodology; recounts information gathered in interviews during field research and the operation situation in Yunnan; considers the limitations inherent in obtain data from China on sensitive topics such as HIV/AIDS; and introduces the reader to the concept of human security as an overview.
