ABSTRACT

China, with almost a fifth of the World’s population, had more than 850 million Internet users in 2020, more than half of all users on Earth. India was second, with 560 million users. Paper was a significant advancement in communication, providing a convenient, portable and relatively inexpensive medium. It was also a necessary development for printing presses, which require standard sizes and weights of paper in order to function. Advances in energy, metals, plastics and chemistry were necessary for every modern communication technology, from industrial printing to electronics. Photography provided the technology to make movies, leading to the film industry, followed by TV content and videos, which have all had significant influences on cultural and social norms. Digital media were developed out of analog electronics. Digital media made production of all previous media types, from print to audio to video, easier while providing greater versatility, efficiency and capabilities.
