ABSTRACT

In this chapter I discuss the “fact of globalization,” and consider its normative significance. Following that I lay out a way to re-conceive the logical space surrounding debates on global justice. A discussion of the fact of globalization demonstrates how the circumstances of justice and politics have changed. This in turn leads directly into a consideration of the two common responses to globalization—statism and cosmopolitanism. Distinguishing axiological questions from deontic questions it will be shown that much of what are considered strengths of statism are (a) confused, and (b) can be realized within a cosmopolitan framework.
