ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the gender differences related to alcohol use. It reviews the impact on special populations and alcohol consumption around the world. One of the main predictors for having an alcohol use disorder is experiencing trauma. People who suffer from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder often turn to alcohol and other drugs to manage the intense flood of emotions and traumatic reminders. The chapter explores a generalized overview of the main regions in the world. The World Health Organization puts out a Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health. Some of the key findings from the 2018 report include: the regions that consume the least amount of alcohol tend to be Asia and Africa. In 2016 the chief medical officers of the United Kingdom recommended keeping alcohol use to lower than 14 units a week, not on a regular basis, and to spread it out evenly over three or more days to reduce risk of long-term illness and injury.
