ABSTRACT

This last chapter of the book deals with the third urban revolution and the worldwide urban explosion begun in the second half of the twentieth century and continuing today. My thrust will be on the effect of world urbanization on people as they migrate into the city and on their consequent city lives and experiences. Modernization theory—its strengths and limitations—will be analyzed. Of particular importance will be the development of world systems theory and dependency theory. We will examine these theories and the reactions towards them through the lens of urban political economy, and the new urban sociology and sociospatial perspectives that were introduced earlier in this book. The chapter will also include a section on the technological revolution anchored by the computerization of knowledge and its implications for people's lives.
