ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of Chinese migrants in Australia and describes the research methodology. Building a sense of home is especially significant to Chinese migrants because the Chinese culture has a long and strong tradition of family care and many of them prefer to live with their adult children and grandchildren in Australia. Since qualitative research is most appropriate for exploring the meaning of lived experiences of people, the methodology adopted is qualitative in-depth interviews and photo-elicitation method to complement interviews. The chapter describes procedures of participant recruitment, data collection, and data analyses of two studies, participated by 40 older Chinese migrants between 2016 and 2018. All participants were born overseas. In one of the two studies, participants provided photographs signifying home to them, in addition to sharing their experiences and stories through individual interviews. The chapter explains in what ways photographs can be a helpful form of visual elicitation and prompts during interviews, as well as discusses how photographs provide an opportunity for older participants to voice their experiences in a more engaging way.
