This chapter sets out the author’s quest to retrieve whatever we can of Anandibai’s life and times. Piecing her life together through her numerous correspondences and contemporary accounts in print media, this volume reassembles the life of a woman ahead of her time. The introduction contextualises the volume’s attempt to search for ‘the real Anandibai Joshee’, in which the readers are invited to participate.
