ABSTRACT

As Anandibai oscillated between sculpting a separate and strong identity for herself and submerging her identity in her – as she saw it, but not as it really was – she had perhaps lost sight of some of its salient facets. The two-year absence while Anandibai went from strength to strength, while Gopalrao stagnated and contented himself with basking in her reflected glory through newspaper publicity, perhaps hardened Gopalrao’s frustration into envy of her achievements. Gopalrao’s arrival in the United States was an event, but commanded much less attraction. As he went on to establish himself through his adventures, Anandibai was quite embarrassed by his neglect of duties. This chapter sketches the stark contrast in their experiences.
