ABSTRACT

Following Anandibai’s death, she was remembered and revered for her courage and many acheivements. However, as showcased in this chapter, she was also undermined as a creation of her visionary husband, a tool for national reform. The news of her death was much publicised, with print in circulation valorising her silent suffering. Regardless, Anandibai Joshee has been revered as a changemaker, one of the earliest Indian feminists and a woman of uncommon courage who in her short lifetime left a lasting mark on Indian social reform.
