ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the Anandibai Joshee’s first correspondence with Mrs Carpenter, a connection that enabled her to pursue her ambitions abroad. She first came into contact with her American associate in 1880, which lead to a lasting relationship based on affection and reverence. This chapter, through ananlysis of extracts taken from their correspondences, sheds light not only on developments in Anandibai’s and Mrs Carpenter’s lives, but also on their inner lives and private thoughts. Their letters heralded a voluminous correspondence: Common ground was rapidly established, and basic information about each other’s country, culture, and customs exchanged in what Mrs Carpenter was later to call ‘a delightful correspondence of three years’.
