ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes how the shape and content of the global compacts were the result of three larger shifts in global migration governance from hard to soft law, from rights to aid, and from Cold War politics to nationalism. The compacts were significant because, first, they put migration and displacement on the global agenda; second, they introduced new framings of concepts; and, third, they established the architecture of global migration governance. The chapter presents four proposals for fundamental reform of global migration governance that address the challenges that were ignored by the global compacts. Finally, the chapter concludes by looking toward the future of migration and displacement in world politics.
