ABSTRACT

The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is a massive water delivery system which will transport Colorado River water to the central part of the State of Arizona. It consists of a series of pumping plants and aqueducts which will lift the water almost 2,000 feet in elevation and carry it over 300 miles. An intake channel behind Parker Dam at Lake Havasu will divert the Colorado River water to be used for the CAP. One is the outcome of negotiations of a regional group seeking agreement among the area's major water users over the management of CAP and groundwater resources. The other determining factor will be the final allocations of the CAP water decided upon by the Secretary of the Interior. CAP water was to have been placed in regulatory storage behind Orme Dam at the confluence of the Salt and Gila Rivers. CAP water allocated to Indian tribes in the state will necessitate federal construction of distribution systems to reservations.
