ABSTRACT

Most of the newcomers felt that being an Outsider was a little like being a foreigner in a strange land. Similar to attitudes toward foreigners in many countries, including the United States, Fairbanksans ascribed a rough classification system to the newcomers. Outsiders with the lowest status in Fairbanks were the unskilled and inexperienced persons coming to Alaska for "the big bucks." Fairbanksans decided to rely upon a campaign to discourage people without jobs from coming to Alaska. Fairbanks is a town that demands a degree of resourcefulness. Prices are high. Living quarters are hard to find. There are few recreation facilities outside of the bars and churches. Men in the halls complain of the inactivity, the waiting, the boredom, the high summer and low winter temperatures. But, many stay in Fairbanks until their date come around and they can get out on the pipeline.
