ABSTRACT

Wisconsin is Chicago's playground. In every county of the state residents of metropolitan Chicago are the single largest group of travellers. Wisconsin, especially Milwaukee, is synonymous with beer. After all, Joseph Schlitz is "the beer that made Milwaukee famous." The smaller regional breweries in Wisconsin were also started by German immigrants. For example, the original Leinenkugel family arrived from Cologne in 1845 and founded a brewery in Sauk City; their son started the brewery in Chippewa Falls. The decline in the number of Wisconsin breweries resulted from several factors: Many small breweries were bought up or forced out of business by larger breweries. Large breweries had lower production costs per volume of beer. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture promotes dairy-product consumption within and outside the state and makes dairying visible to consumers. Converted barns also catch the attention of travelers—reminding us that Wisconsin is indeed a land of barns.
