ABSTRACT

What do these people have in common: a historian writing about medieval India, an archaeologist interpreting an ancient painting in the British Museum, a visitor in Kyoto looking at a well-known Buddha image in Japan, a Chinese reading Monkey or Journey to the West or an American watching a dramatization of it on TV, and a Buddhist priest chanting a popular translation of the Heart Sutra ? All are looking to Xuanzang, whether they know it or not, and are coming into contact with his legacy to the world. Xuanzang has made a contribution to the fields of Indian history, archaeology, art history, Chinese literature, and the translation of Buddhist scriptures.
