ABSTRACT

Most local political affairs in Wyoming have been conducted on a nonpartisan basis. Much of the region that constitutes Wyoming was originally a part of the politically maneuvered Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Through two senators and one representative in the United States (US) Congress Wyoming could effectively secure for its area and its citizens not only recognition, but also a full voice on legislation of interest or concern. The Territory of Wyoming was formally organized on July 25, 1868. The boundaries of Wyoming were clearly defined by the organic act that created it in 1890, but, according to the US Constitution its functions were to be those “not specifically reserved to the federal government”, as was true of all states. Wyoming has always been a two-party state; however, the polls repeatedly indicate a discernible inclination among Wyoming voters toward the Republican party.
