ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a conceptual reflection on the history of transatlantic relations in the realm of European integration. It deals with economic problems between the United States and the European Community. The book focuses mainly on two aspects: the impact of the Community internal market on the United States; and the deadlock in the Uruguay Round negotiations. It discusses the political and strategic aspects, a domain also characterized by tenacious myths. In the view of many Europeans, the US has always tried to destroy any velleity toward integration. Relations between the European Community and the United States are gaining new momentum. The issue is whether there will be an evolution toward a US-EC partnership or toward a series of conflicts. A multidisciplinary approach is dictated by the nature of the relations between the United States and the European Community.
