ABSTRACT

The connecting roads and catwalks, as well as the placement of Chairlifts 2 and 17 a little over halfway down, help create more than enough possible combinations to keep skiers of all ability levels content with this region. Avanti is one of the most popular runs on Vail Mountain because of its length, variety of terrain, and central location. The upper section is a wide, gently rolling intermediate run. Much of the front side of Vail Mountain is forested with dense stands of pine and spruce. The tree growth on these north-facing slopes allows very few of the sun's rays to penetrate to the forest floor. The Black Forest ski trail cuts through one of the thickest of these areas. The run is an offshoot of lower Avanti. To reach Black Forest, ski on the right-hand side of the flats just below Avanti's most difficult face. Spruce Face is probably one of the least known runs on Vail Mountain.
