ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the body movement, spatial arrangements, and atmosphere in Sombreiro and presents an analysis of how the experiments with shadow could be manipulated in the creation of the dance solo Sombreiro as a work conceived with a personal cultural context in mind. It discusses the reference studies by Jung and Jungian specialists on the concept of archetype in order to support the analysis of movement inspired by the myth of Yemanja. The main characteristic of the Maragojipe carnival is a welcoming atmosphere, in which no notion of social hierarchy is apparent. This differs from the Rio de Janeiro and Salvador carnivals, which have a more commercial approach in terms of accessibility. A protester at the 2017 Maragojipe carnival dressed up to denounce the Odebrecht scandal. A man was dressed in black, wearing a presidential ribbon, and carried a suitcase full of fake Brazilian money, with the label ‘Money from Odebrecht’.
