ABSTRACT

Gómez-Peña describes interdisciplinary strategies and contexts beyond the traditional art world (community contexts, the media, street activism, social technology). He attempts to map out the fluctuating territories of live art; the essay in defense of performance has been expanded for a new generation of young artists interested in body-based art practice. “Practical Jobs for Utopian Artists” tackles the scarcity of funding and the importance of interdisciplinary roles as “imaginary activism.” Includes a discussion with Gabriela Salgado about “the zones of silence,” living and working away from their original homelands and language and the politics of exclusion in the “international” art world. Gómez-Peña offers advice about how to negotiate and enter “the Art World.” Curator FCR Francesca Carol Rolla challenges performance troupes La Pocha Nostra and VestAndPage to question curatorial practice through letter writing. “New Global Culture” is an essay detailing corporate multiculturalism and the mainstream from a border perspective.
