ABSTRACT

This chapter is important for any schools who wish to establish a rigorous, evidence-based and thoughtful whole-school approach to teaching writing in order to drive school improvement. It emphasises the importance of the essential role of the designated literacy co-ordinator in working closely and over time with senior leaders to ensure whole-school literacy success. Advice is given on how schools can develop and maintain a community of writers and ensure writing has a high profile in school, within the local community and beyond. Guidance is given on how to organise the most effective continued professional development and how engagement with staff can be carried out successfully. Finally, instruction is given on how schools, leaders and individual staff can evaluate the effectiveness of their writing teaching.
