ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the dwelling’s heating system whether gas fired, oil fired, electric or solid fuel. Guidance is given for electrical and lighting installations including the minimum allowable light fittings and socket outlets per room. Converting the loft space will require the electrical circuit to be extended to provide power to the new usable space. Depending on the age of the property, hot water storage cylinders and cold water storage cisterns may be present in the roof space. Consideration should be given to existing flue outlets that terminate through the roof space. The outlet from a flue should be above the roof of a building in a position where the products of combustion can discharge freely and also, if a balanced flue, air can be taken in, while not presenting a fire hazard, whatever the wind conditions. The main concern here is the addition of dormer windows, roof lights and other openings.
