ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on how a loft conversion will alter and affect the existing structure. It explains the four main types of roof design that are found in existing dwellings and how converting this space can have an effect on the wall construction below. The chapter also explains what to expect from different roof designs and how converting this space can have an effect on the wall construction below. Care should be taken to maintain the structural integrity of the whole dwelling throughout the construction process. A loft conversion will alter the existing structure in a variety of ways depending on the type of conversion being undertaken. It will affect the wall construction, roof construction and the internal layout in respect of means of escape in case of fire. In general, there are three types of roof construction found in existing homes - these are discussed briefly over the following pages.
