ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the importance of the location of the new stairs when carrying out a loft conversion. It highlights the four types of stairs available for use, the stair construction, minimum headroom requirements and guidance for creating the stairwell opening. Another factor to consider is the position of the new stair in the converted loft. The stair will need to terminate at or near to where the roof pitch is at its highest, as the Building Regulations stipulate a minimum headroom above a stairway. Ideally a conventional or traditional stair should be provided similar to that which provides access from the ground floor to the first floor. The stair must be designed and installed in accordance with the Building Regulations, meeting certain criteria such as pitch, rise and going, headroom, etc.
