ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the fire safety information relevant to several dwelling types. It presents fire detection and fire alarm systems, means of escape, compartmentation, the building fabric and load-bearing elements. The chapter describes building control bodies have varying views as to which of the technical solutions for Fire Safety. The protection of life in the event of fire is extremely important and should not be taken lightly. Where new habitable rooms are provided above ground-floor level, a fire detection and fire alarm system should be installed because this will significantly increase the level of safety by automatically giving an early warning of fire. It is essential that fire detection and fire alarm systems are properly designed, installed and maintained. Where a fire alarm system is installed, an installation and commissioning certificate should be provided.
