ABSTRACT
Chapter 11 examines the interaction of language and gender, beginning with early studies of the differences between how men and women speak and of how languages encode gender. It then problematizes those studies with an examination of gender as nonbinary and performative, focusing on the ways that today’s English is adapting to reflect current ideas about gender.
