ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 discusses the basics of phonology (phonemes, allophones, minimal pairs, phonetic environment, and complementary distribution), illustrating the rule-governed nature of the sound system of language. Articulatory processes are then described. To connect what students are learning to the world around them, the chapter examines the history of aks as a pronunciation of ask, noting the articulatory process that led to changes in its pronunciation. The interaction of phonology and morphology is next examined, followed by a discussion of how children learn the phonology of their language.
