ABSTRACT

While the role of parents, friends and others is acknowledged, the main focus is on staff running Self Managed Learning programmes. A model showing five particular roles is presented with evidence for its use. The four core roles are: theory providers; designers; managers and learning advisers. The fifth role is that of integrating these four along with the role of maintaining the rigour and coherence of any programme. A New Educational Paradigm is based on a different theoretical basis from traditional schooling. This leads to the fact that the design of programmes is different and requires the integration of macro and micro designing. While managerial roles have some similarity to those in traditional schools, the role of the learning adviser is hugely different.
