ABSTRACT
Discussing Virgil and Dante closely, this chapter underscores their works – The Aeneid and The Divine Comedy – as those of an unprecedented pair who have crucially fashioned the European poetic tradition at distinct and important moments of transition in their history, in effect laying down the conceptual foundations for European poetry. The chapter also discusses the role played by Dante in continuing the tradition built by Virgil.
