ABSTRACT
A United States (U.S) presence can thus be on the scene wherever such a commitment is deemed essential. A CEWI contingent is being attached to each US Army division. In the course of the 1970s the US Army had to confront the threat of mushrooming numbers of Soviet bloc tanks and other armored vehicles in central Europe and in Korea. The US Army was forced to cope with this growing armored phalanx while handicapped by a shortage of funds and volunteer soldiers, and compelled to secure new weapons for a vast array of equipment long overdue for replacement. The US Army is in the process of developing a new high technology light division that can be deployed by air and yet be able to hold its own against enemy armor. A new general purpose tactical transport helicopter, the Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk, is rapidly entering US Army service.
