ABSTRACT

The United States Marine Corps is a unique body of troops. It emphasizes a proud tradition, based upon a remarkable record of achievement in war and peace. A number of analysts have urged that the Marine Corps should assume the entire responsibility for rapid deployment missions, in accord with the adoption by the United States of a dominant maritime strategy. The Marines lack significant armor, artillery, and logistical support for sustained operations. Marine Amphibious Brigades are designed to meet more substantial combat demands. The Marines are, of course, dependent upon helicopters for mobility, both for “vertical envelopment” in the attack and for movement within a theatre. The Marine Corps badly needs large quantities of new and electronically secure voice and data communications equipment. Marines and their equipment must be deployed and supported by amphibious warfare ships. Marine Amphibious Brigades are substantial formations; with integrated air support by helicopters and warplanes, and backed by service and support units and personnel.
