I NTRODUCTION TO ENCOURAG EMENT The most basic concepts are too often taken for granted, ignored, or dismissed as simplistic. The changing and challenging role of manager requires new standards of excellence. In fact, the very term "manager," symbolic of a dictatorial, autocratic, controlling style, is dying. Like the legendary phoenix, a new bird, "leader," is emerging from the ashes.
