ABSTRACT

Not being able to communicate can be one of the most frustrating and difficult problems for a person with dementia and also for their family and carers. As the illness progresses the person with dementia finds it more and more difficult to communicate verbally and to understand what others are saying. Imagine what this must be like! There are many parts to communication and it is important that the carer is aware of all of them to be able to communicate effectively with a person with dementia. These are always important but even more so when communicating with people in later stages of dementia. Before the authors look more closely at what is involved in good communication it is important to check and prepare some basics. A person with dementia will read your body language and get information from your voice tone and facial expressions.
