ABSTRACT

New parents can feel as if they are stuck in a surreal fog. Breastfeeding can also be a source of considerable stress for women. With all of the pressure today to breastfeed, women who are unable to, or who do not want to, sometimes feel as if they have failed their babies. The myths surrounding breastfeeding include: Every woman can and should breastfeed. What a baby needs most from his mother is love, affection and a sense of security. Many new parents experience feelings of anxiety and helplessness when they cannot figure out just why their babies are acting a certain way – crying incessantly, not sleeping or eating. Some parents experience performance anxiety when it comes time to care for their newborns. Nearly every new parent will admit that having a baby involves a tremendous amount of work.
