ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews and details the opportunities and steps necessary to sell in foreign markets. Resources, skill sets, and cultural balance are very relevant factors. Foreign business development is different from export sales. Export sales have goods originating in the United States or being shipped from the United States to foreign destinations. Most companies will tend to export from the United States and then as the business expands will look to controlling the distribution into that country and even manufacture locally, as a natural business progression. The clear majority of consumer and commercial markets lie outside the United States boundaries. Margins are the key ingredient for sustainable growth and business development. The US Commercial Service, part of the US Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, offers companies a full range of expertise in international trade. The Commercial Service Mexico offers a number of specialists covering virtually every industry to assist you in entering the Mexican market.
