ABSTRACT

This chapter describes events and decisions that would otherwise be flattened or forgotten. It takes inspiration from anthropological work done in technical settings. While the two previous case study chapters have come from the perspective of an outsider, this chapter and the one that follows come from the position of someone engaged in building a system, and they attempt to keep track of the complexities that were involved in the early stages of its development and growth. This chapter gives concrete insight into concepts that are presented in a more abstract way in later chapters. Combined with Chapter 6, it uses the digitally aided fabrication of prostheses as a foil against which other examples of digitally aided custom production can be compared.
