ABSTRACT

To brainstorm is to generate a list of ideas. In design thinking, brainstorming is a creative activity where a team of people work together to generate ideas that respond to a specific prompt. In the case of design thinking, teams are typically brainstorming in response to a need within a problem space that they have identified for one or more design partners. In some circles, this is referred to as ideating—the act of generating ideas.

The stages of brainstorming are introduced and discussed including: orientation to the brainstorming goals and techniques; activities for generating and sharing ideas; and prioritizing and selecting ideas to take forward in the solution process. Techniques and ways to facilitate brainstorming while keeping it energetic, fun, collaborative, and productive are shared.
