The environment has five components: the natural environment, natural resources, wildlife, the farmed environment and the built environment. The focus of this chapter is the natural environment, natural resources and wildlife, and how these together act as tourist attractions. In summary, the type of tourism discussed in the chapter can be termed ‘nature-based tourism’, and for at least 30 years much nature-based travel has been referred to as ecotourism. This chapter focuses on the relationship between tourism and nature, discusses the concept of ecotourism and considers a number of management issues in relation to ecotourism.
