ABSTRACT

The chapter provides an overview of the key issues in relation to tourism impacts and the consequent responses in terms of planning and management that have been discussed in earlier chapters. The final section of the chapter considers possible future directions for tourism, with a critical discussion of factors that may lead to a continued growth in tourism numbers; such as increased wealth and greater leisure time, as well as transport improvements and changing attitudes to travel and tourism. It also evaluates factors that may inhibit this growth; such as global warming, economic recession, terrorism, disease and overtourism.
