ABSTRACT

A golden thread of this book is the idea of the Good Society. It forms the base of the arguments of this text. The main point of departure of the book is that social re-engineering could give birth to this kind of society in South Africa. Therefore, this chapter explains what the Good Society really is. It dissects this concept while taking into consideration the other issues which have been unpacked in the text, among others: social policy, social re-engineering and inclusive development. The former have a bearing on this book’s proposed solutions as regards post-apartheid South Africa’s development agenda and its ability to sever ties with its colonial and apartheid past.
